2026 Graduate Research Colloquium – registration open!

Registration is now open for the 2026 SMGS Graduate Research Colloquium in Modern Greek Studies, which will be held on Friday 26 June 2026, 9am-5pm at the University of Reading.

The sessions will take place in Room G27 – Tony Watkins Lecture Theatre, Edith Morley Building, Whiteknights Campus, Shinfield Road RG6 6EL.  

As the programme shows, the colloquium will be divided into three panels, and it will include a wide range of papers on topics such as:  

  • the 1897 Greek invasion of Crete 
  • the ‘adventurers’ of the Prokopiou brothers in Ethiopia
  • the culture wars of the 1980s Greece as interpreted by movie critics 
  • German and Austrian exiles in 1930s Athens and Greek-German literary interactions
  • Soviet literature in the Greek Civil War 
  • school history and national identity in contemporary Greece 
  • the Greek reception of Édouard Louis through the lens of family, elective kinship, and queer self-writing 
  • Hellenism in the poetry of George Seferis and C.P. Cavafy 
  • Greek parliamentary debates on gold standard adoption, 1875–1885 
  • the political party EDA and anti-imperialist movements
