Invitation to a Reading.

Friday 25th October, 5pm-6.15pm, Taylor Institute Oxford.

Three scholars and translators of Modern Greek poetry will read a selection of their translations and their own poems.

Sarah Ekdawi, Anthony Hirst and David Ricks wrote doctoral theses on Modern Greek poetry and are also published poets. Their engagement with Greek poetry stretches back over several decades; their engagement with English poetry began in childhood. Their translations from the Greek draw on the resources and rhythms of English poetry; their original poems owe something to their Greek readings.

The original poetry the translators will present is very different from each other’s in tone and content, and their translation aims and practices are also very different. What unites their work, both original and translated, is the aim of writing poetry in English.

This event is supported by the Society for Modern Greek Studies.
