Sylvia Ioannou Foundation: Scholarships for postgraduate studies related to Cyprus

The Scholarship Programme is one of the Foundation’s top priorities. Its aim is to support young scientists and students from Cyprus and Greece who wish to undertake postgraduate studies (Master or PhD) in any scientific field, but with Cyprus as the thematic axis of their dissertation. The main prerequisite therefore is that the island of Cyprus is the central theme of the postgraduate thesis or doctoral dissertation, regardless of subject matter. It could, for example, be related to the history, geography, culture or society of Cyprus.

The scholarships are addressed to Greek and Cypriot graduates of Greek or Cypriot universities with a degree of at least eight (8) and up to 33 years of age.

The scholarship is for financial support with a fixed amount, irrespective of tuition or university, and is renewable annually for a maximum duration of three (3) years. The number of scholarships and the amount available per year depends on the interest that will emerge and the potential of the Sylvia Ioannou Foundation. Scholars may look for other sources of funding for their studies.

The new, 7th Scholarship Programme for the academic year 2019-2020 opens in 1st of March 2019. The final submission date is 30 April 2019, and the results will be announced in July 2019.

  • regular attendance of their individual study courses (Greek language lessons, literary translation courses, seminars and talks on Greek literature, etc.)
  • work on a translation project (e.g. the translation of a selection of poetry or a short story, etc.) under the supervision of a professional translator
  • regular meetings with the director of the programme
  • the submission every three months of a progress report to the director of the programme.

Note: For the first three months of the scholarship, the student will be on probation.

The programme is addresses advanced foreign students who:

  • are foreign nationals and permanent residents of their country of origin
  • hold a degree in a germane subject (e.g., Modern Greek studies; translation studies; foreign languages and literatures; classical studies, etc.)
  • have a strong language learning aptitude and can demonstrate a good reading knowledge of Greek. (In exceptional cases, and following the recommendation of the Evaluation Committee, an individual may be admitted to begin studying Greek, in Greece, at the entrance level); and
  • provide sufficient evidence as to their motivation for wishing to join and be part of the programme.

Candidates will be notified by 26/7/2018

Length of the scholarship: 10 months. Applications may be submitted between 07/02 and 17/5 (in the preceding year). In addition, two letters of reference (preferably from their University tutors who can confirm the candidate’s suitability for the programme) should also be sent by post.
